Holiday Pancreatitis: Myths vs Facts

Some of you may have seen videos circulating online telling you that human food causes pancreatitis in dogs. This really irks me because it’s wrong. Just like people, dogs are best nourished by a whole food diet. Cases of pancreatitis do spike during holiday season, but it’s misleading to blame ALL “human” food. Did you know that deaths from heart attacks spike by 40% in people during the last week of December, too? This period of overindulgence also puts humans at risk. But it’s not ALL food.

Overeating can trigger the onset of acute health emergencies in both dogs and people. But it’s never just one meal that does all the damage. It’s the meals you eat everyday that matter. The type of food, amount consumed, and overall health of the dog (or person!) all contribute to a health event. A diverse, whole food diet is always a good thing for you and your pup.

I saw a video for Chicken Parmesan on Instagram, and even though I’ve never had it myself, I just had to make a version for Cedric and Edith. This meal is balanced per AAFCO standards. Not that I really think it matters for special meals, but like I’ve said before, it’s for your peace of mind.

Honestly, this exact recipe is a bit of a pain to make. If it’s not a special occasion, you can simplify it by making the chicken without breading and just mashing the beets, eggs and oysters together. Your dog will still love it.
